14-16 giugno
The feast of San Vito in Forio is one of the most important and heartfelt celebrations on the island of Ischia. San Vito is the patron saint of the municipality of Forio, and his feast, celebrated every year on June 15th, is an event rooted in centuries of history and tradition. The figure of San Vito is not only a religious figure for the community, but also a symbol of protection, prosperity, and blessing for all Forians.
History of San Vito and the Feast
Saint Vito is a Christian saint who lived in the 4th century. Born in Mariano, Sicily, Vito was the son of Christian parents who raised him in the faith from a young age. According to tradition, the saint became known for his healing abilities and extraordinary faith. He was martyred during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, and his death was followed by a great popular cult that spread throughout Italy and Europe.
The feast of San Vito in Forio has very ancient origins, dating back to the Middle Ages. It is said that the people of Forio, in times of difficulty, invoked Saint Vitus for protection from natural disasters and for the prosperity of their crops. The saint was considered the protector of crops, health, and the community at large. The feast, therefore, became an occasion not only to honor the saint, but also to celebrate community life and renew the bonds of solidarity among citizens.
